The video shown below is a talk that was given by one of the founding members of FFRFSLC at a meeting of Oasis Salt Lake right after our chapter was formed. In this talk he describes why he felt a Salt Lake Chapter was needed and he discusses some activities we might want to do, as well as some we might want to not do.
Note: The sound quality isn't great, but if you turn on the closed captioning (by clicking the "CC" button on the video) you can read subtitles of everything he's saying.
We are members of the national Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) who are concerned about the undue influence which religion exerts in Utah over our government, our schools, and our lives in general.
Anyone interested in defending church/state separation in the state of Utah is welcome to join forces with us.
Most of us live in the Salt Lake Valley, but not all of us. People who live anywhere near Salt Lake City are encouraged to join us, and you may interpret the term "anywhere near" however you like. We currently have FFRF members as far away as St. George saying they'd like to join us, at least for exchanging ideas. We don't expect to see those folks in person very often, if ever, but we benefit from their input and we hope they benefit from ours.
To be honest, we're still figuring that out. We only became an official chapter of FFRF in February (of 2025) and haven't yet firmed up our plans. (Please note that this website is still a work in progress.) Our general goal is to further the mission of the Freedom From Religion Foundation in the state of Utah. More specifically, we work to protect the wall that America's founding fathers placed between church and state, which is an especially flimsy wall here in Utah. We do this through education, outreach and, if necessary, litigation.
We've decided that for now the Salt Lake Chapter of FFRF will emphasize community outreach and activism over regular social gatherings, since other local groups already exist who hold regular free-thinker social gatherings. If you would like to connect up with secular humanisit groups who hold live, face-to-face meetings in the Salt Lake area, we suggest...
- Salt Lake Oasis, meets weekly ( https://www.saltlakeoasis.org/ )
- SLCPostMos, meet every other week ( https://www.meetup.com/postmormons/ )
- Salt City Skeptics, meets once a month ( https://www.meetup.com/saltcityskeptics/ )
- Lost And Found Club, meets once a month ( https://www.lostandfound.club/ )
If you know of other Salt Lake area secular humanist groups who meet regularly, please let us know (via email to ffrfslc@gmail.com) and we'll post a link to them here.
